Recognizing Signs & Symptoms

It is important to remember that anyone—people of all ages, races and social classes—can develop a mental health issue.

There are many different signs and symptoms that indicate someone may be dealing with a mental health issue. These signs and symptoms can look different in different people.

One key indicator is if the person begins to act out of character or differently from how they usually act. For example, an energetic person may become lethargic for a considerable period of time or a person who is usually quiet may begin to make bold or grandiose statements about their abilities. A mental health issue can affect how someone thinks, feels and acts.

The best way to prevent a mental health issue from getting worse is to recognize symptoms early and get professional help. Often issues related to mental health and mental wellness can be successfully treated.

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, depression and anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses. And because mental illnesses are more likely to come up during times of stress or uncertainty, the more common signs and symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety have been detailed below to aid in early recognition.
